Research - Digipack

Magazine advert for the digipack (CD/DVD package)

This album cover is for a selection of songs from the Soul eater Anime series. Which includes 'Paper moon' the song i shall be using for my coursework piece.

I like the style as its bright and colourful and also includes charterers from the show as seen on the cover i may decide to also use characters from the show on my album cover.

This is the album cover for the song 'Paper moon'. I believe it isn't very well spaced and the colour scheme inst that appealing. the use of Photo frame style i good picture i believe that the picture is to small.

Here is an example of album cover that is has been drawn i think it gives a good effect and makes it more cartoon like with bright and bold colours and attractive to the audience . I believe that i may draw the cover either by hand, using computer software a combination of the two.

This album cover is also drawn but doesn't use colours. This could reflect mood or style of the songs played and include all members of the band on stage possible giving the impression that the band is playing for the listener

This album cover uses little colour and detail but is effective as it gives the consumer an insight in to the the singer, her likes and hobbies. This could help the audience to identity with the artist.

This album cover could show the artist as being different as she is outside the box. This could reflect the style of singing and songs as being creative. It may be interesting to use an idea like this to show that the song/artist is different/unique.

I like this album cover as it uses both photography and drawn pictures to give a mix of responses from the audience some are humorous e.g. the dog wearing police hat. This is an interesting idea but i don't believe i will use this idea and use only one style and not a mixture

I Believe that this is a good example of an album cover as its uses colour well and portrays the singer as being innocent. I think the use of colour, rainbow type colouring pixels gives a good effect and colour possible reflect/show that there is a different range of songs. As the album is 'family friendly' it can be targeted at a wider range of consumers e.g. parents buying gifts for children.

Props

On Saturday 25/6/11 i created a witches broom for the music video using sticks and wilds grasses.

I originally planned on using just small sticks and bundling them together around the end of a pole.
Unfortunately i wasn't able to gather a number of twigs and sticks so instead i used wild grasses that grow near i live and placed them around the metal pole with a twig in the middle.

After looking through a bag of old Halloween costumes wear i was able to find a witches hat and a starry cape for the singer to wear

Results from questionnaire

I asked 10 people to complete my questionnaire

1). Gender

5 were Male and 5 were Female

This would make the results representative of gender as there is an equal input of information from both genders

2). Age

I asked the respondents age, on average they were between 16-18 years of age. This would allow me to get the viewpoints of my target audience as i am aiming my music video for teenagers.

3). Favourite type of music

From the results of this question i can predict that my target audience prefers pop and  R&B. This will help me with to decide on the type of music i will choose to best please the target audience

4). Narrative or Story line, i asked the respondents i the questionnaire how complex/intricate the story line should or shouldn't be.

These bar chart shows my target audience prefer a music video with a strong storyline/narrative

5). Focus on band instruments, i asked in my questionnaire how much focus should be given to different members of the band.

The results show that the audience prefer the majority of the focus to be on the singer. I will use these results to help with storyboarding and to decide how much focus should be on each band member.

6). Introduction to a story line and ending to a music video. I asked whether the audience prefer an intro and outro to a music video.

Why

1. Makes it more interesting
2. because in hook the audience (and keeps them interested)
3. The ending helps to sum up the beginning and it's always fun and interesting to have a story line
4. Don't mind as long as the video relates to the music
5. because it helps the audience to stay interested in the video and also helps us to understand what the song           may be about
6. I don't think its absolutely vital but its often a nice touch
7. some songs benefit from an introduction in order to clarify the lyrics … other songs more easily stand on there       own
8. makes the song and video more interesting
9. I want to hear the music not see a start of a music video
10. Completes the music video format in a turn makes it into an product

I will use these comments in order to help plan out and make my music video a better quality

7). Preferred gender of singer. I asked which gender they prefer to see in a music video and hear singing.

From these results i can conclude that my target audience prefer a female singer overall, but it depends on the mood and theme of the song according to comments.

reflects the ethos of the game it was created for, computer and technological
only use of text
gives credit to those who help make it, on the right of the screen throughout

Yuna Ito - I Don't Want To Miss A Thing

Yuna Ito's cover of the hit song 'I don't want to miss a thing' song by Aerosmith.

Has long intro so it allows the audience to focus on band and interments
The shots favor the singer Yuna Ito and i believe they represent her to the audience as being kind and gentle, this could be used create empathy for the singer.

lots of fades, may reflect song pace
transition at impact points to keep audience interested
The use of a focus pull has been used to a high level use
shots of pre-preduction and preparation of song during sequence

Research 3

Corinne Bailey Rae - Put Your Records On

Use of tracking shots may have been used to establish the setting and make the auidience feel a part of the music video.
The cut away establishes settings and used to break up the video and act like a transition
Close ups such as on bike may be used to add different perspectives and views of the audiences and .
This music video reflects the pace and a leisurely feel.
The lighting is bright this could reflect the happiness and reflects mood
out of focus this draws attention to different aspects of the music video
Environment/settings could make the audience think of relaxing, open and 'breathtaking' scenery
There are examples of lots of long shots to establish environment and show the pace as pace slow

Research 2

Caramelldansen by Caramell

Caramel is a Swedish pop group in there video they also use animation in there music video. It consists of 3 female individuals doing a very repetitive dance. The quality of the animation if poor and is looped most of the time. The background changing throughout is a good idea but i believe that the video doesn't use it as well as it could. In comparison to other animated music video's such as in Research 1 it is of a low level. I believe i will use the idea of changing background styles and also to look at there mistakes so i do not repeat any during my project.

I believe that the quick cuts and lack of  transitions are used so reflect the fasted pased beat of the song and to keep the auidience interested.
Fast zooms and reverse zooms may have been used to give the appearence of motion and offers more variation then just static images i may use this idea in my own media piece to promote variety
background apears to move with foreground, this could be used to get the auidience more involed. This may get the auidience more involved as it might replicate the view point of someone dancing.
The basic animations are used so that the animaters are able to create the music video faster and with greater ease. I believe that i will also be using basic animation/drawings as its much more straight forward them having to draw complex pictures. I believe it also gives a cartoony feel that may make the song/video more appealing to a younger auidince.
The dancing  are repetative this could be used to promote a dance adding another depth to the song.

This music video promotes the artists as young and energetic and so will be attractive to aderlessents/young adults.
As im also doing an animated music video so therefore i will

Research 1

Bad apple!! Silhouette

This music video uses Computer Generated Images (CGI).
I believe that this is a good idea as it uses animation to give a smooth flow to it.
This also uses a lot of linkage devises through out such as the throwing of the apple at the beginning links to the next short sceane of the video. This is a good idea and i may try somthing like this in my own project. The lack of colours throughtout make the images stand out while talking to zak we have decided to not use a wide range of colours and possible only use whites, greys and blacks in order to give a cleaner and more bold pictures
I really like this as it is unusual to find such animation in music video's

 Bad apple!! Stop Motion PV
 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=240Vq6tIxio

There is also a stop motion version of the music video which uses stop motion in order to create a whole different experience for the audience. It uses Polaroid picture with a single shot that builds through out the video layering different once on top of each other. I believe that this is a great idea and presents the song as being unusual as well as very clever.

I do not believe i will use these techniques of Stop Motion and Silhouette as there are time consuming and require a high level of technical experience which i don't have. Therefore i have decided to use certain aspects in which i believe make the video appealing such as its use of linking devices.

The use of shot types in both are varied such as close up's and tracking shots the use of these shots are used to draw the auidences attenchion to certain objects e.g. the apple which are used as linking devises to differnt scence this add to the fluidity of the music video.

For both the stop motion and the Silhouette version of this song i believe the artist is promoted in a  positive light. The use of techniques such as the linking devices could make the auidience more artistic and clever.
