About the magazine advert
I decided to use the same image as from the front cover of the CD cover, this was because i wanted to give an brand identity the tasks so that they would both be recognised as the pretender album cover. The design was a stretched image of the front cover of the CD front cover. I did this so the public would be easily be able to associate them together.
I decided to put it landscape, firstly so i would be able to alter the pictures size without reducing quality of the image but also to allow so it would allow more room for text so was able to increase the size making it more eye catching to the public.
I used 2 different types on font, the first was hand written for the name of the album and band i used this as i thought it gave a more interesting technique and makes it stand out against the other text and back ground. The second i used what i felt was a similar looking text to the previous text, i decided to use it as it gave a good effect and didn't draw the attention away from the other aspects such as the producers and logo.
I decided for the release date to just put "out soon" this is because i thought it would add a sense of mystery and the unknown, this matches the connotations of the pretender title. I also used "out soon" as i wouldn't have to be too specific of when it would be released.
I used Sony music as the record label as it is well known and any may be see as reinforcing the quality/repuatility of the foo fighters and album.
I used a picture of the main singers, zoomed in a drew this used both paper and digital art techniques. I firstly drew an pencil design of a colse up of the face just showing the eye, hair, eye brow and top of nose. After i completed the design i scanned it into the computer and using the drawing programme Sai i added line art. (the process of adding the basic outlines to a picture often used before colouring/shading). I then began to shade and colour the image in greys and blacks. This monocrome effect i believe helps focus the public on the eye which is coloured. I used greys and blacks as i thought it also had conitations of loss of hope and degridation. I coloured the eye yellow as a later image produced by Zak of the lead singer had yellow eyes and added basic eye colours and details such as highlights. I used the picture of the eye to help symbolsie hope, as it is bright agaist the dull colours background. There are also conitations of the eye being the windows of the soul, this could suggest rebeliation agaist the dull and dark image/system.

Analysis of magazine adverts
![]() |
This magazine advert is to promote a live musical show
This magazine advert is composed of an image of a female artist and appears to be partially painted with a brush the colours are faded slightly and are made up of yellows, oranges and purples
It is set on a stained style background which is similar texture to old worn paper and the image promotes a traditional or older art style and connotes messages of an older and more familiar or forgotten music style. The use of circular type stains which connote messages of informality. I feel perhaps making the female artist stand out due to the contract between the older and more traditional style methods with regards to the art style.

The text is white and the text drawn the audiences attention to the more important messages that the media creators wanted to get across these are the:
- the dates
- the word "Essential" which could connote the idea that they must attend
- The name of the band
- the location
- The times

Composition-
This advert is a image of the band Arctic Monkeys and include 4 of the bands members. They are sat on a wall wearing casual clothing this is not untypical of an alternative rock band. There body language appears closed this connotes messages that the band members are more down to earth and not as egotistical of other artist perhaps making them more approachable. The order in which they are sat may reflect there position in the band the lead singer at the front and less well known members towards the back. The lighting is natural and is not that favourable to the band, however the use of focus of the photos background pulls your attention towards the band members. The band members are directly looking at the audience showing them as directly addressing the audience. It is set an urban seemingly run down area which could link into the alternative rock genre as some bands sing about inequality within society and this setting could connote this message to an audience.
The text is composed of different coloured, size and similar font styles, this attracts an audiences attention towards the more important text.
- The name of the band is the main focus
- The mention of an exclusive look into a new album
- The name of the magazine

Digipak - Back of cover
After completing the back drawing i began to add different conventions of digipak's
Firstly i added white blank boxes in which to put text
After creating the box i added a more clear out line
Then i added a barcode which i created using a barcode generator http://www.barcodesinc.com/generator/index.php
Next i added the Copy Right symbol, this another convention of cd covers there is often the copyright symbol to inform the public that the band and producers have legal rights over the creation and distributive rights over there product http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Copyright.svg
I then needed to add a music producers logo/label but after researching 'The Pretender' i wasn't able to find the name of the producers that originally produced the cd. therefore i found a generic music producers logo instead. image was sourced from http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/The_Music_Producer_Logo.jpg
After adding the music producer logo i then added a Sony music Logo , this is also a convention of CD covers that have a label
I then began to add text, i added 'track list' i chose a font style and colour that was similar to the front covers text
I then needed to add the names of other Foo Fighters songs so i went to http://www.songfacts.com/artist-foo_fighters.php had most if not all of the Foo Fighters songs . I then chose 9 different songs titles after including 'the Pretender' first as it is the main focus of the CD
After adding the song titles i then started to add a legal disclaimer that is present CDs and dvd covers.

Digipak - information and images
For the inside cover of the i originally decided to put track lists and songs titles on the inside cover, however i decided to change it to the inside after looking at other cd covers in which the general convention is to have track lists and song titles on the back of the cd cover.
From this i decided to put the song origin and information about the main song 'the pretender' which a sourced from Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Pretender_(Foo_Fighters_song)
"The Meaning Behind the Pretender
In a 2007 interview with frontman Dave Grohl
stopped short of explaining the meaning behind
"The Pretender, but alluded its roots go to
current political unrest.
"That's the thing with lyrics, you never want
to give away specifics, because it's nice for
people to have their ownidea or interpretation
of the song. But, you know, everyone's been
fucked over before and I think a lot ofpeople
feel fucked over right now and they're not
getting what they were promised, and so
something to do with that.
The Pretender was not initially planned for the
album and happened really quickly. That song
didn't happen until later on in the session.
We didn't go into making the record with that
song and it happened after we recorded a lot of
stuff.Up until that point, I didn't know if we
had a good opening song or not. So after we
recorded it, I thought, 'oh this is perfect.
we have the song to open the record,' and it
just became everybody's favorite song. It's the
type of song that I look forward to opening
shows with and it came together really easily.
We put that song together in, I don't know,
a day, whereas a lot of the other songs we
worked on for weeks."

Bar code
Today we were researching bar codes, i used Google to search for websites that generate bar codes. I plan on using a bar code in the design of the digipak cover.
http://www.barcodesinc.com/generator/index.php
After going on the site i looked over it and tested it out before starting to make the barcode i would use for my digpak
.
I then decided on the text i would input 'Foo Fighters - The Predender' i will put this as the album name.
.
.
After clicking 'generate' it produced a bar code that had 'Foo Fighters - The Predender' underneath it.
.
As it was to small to fit the box i entered advanced settings and changed the size
.
I clicked generate and produced a bar code
.
.
after clicking on it to enlarge the image i proceeded so save it in my documents to use at a later stage of development for my digi pak
.

Digipak final idea selection
This idea stemmed from the pretender song and title, the idea of the 'pretender' has conitations of mystery and illusion. It gave me an idea of actors and the supposed 'metaphorical mask' that people wear to shield themselves from the world. The outside cover is a face (the singers) and the inside is a mask showing that he is wearing this mask
