Results from Premier Questionnaire

Results from Questionnaire

We showed our completed animated music video to a sample of 5 participants that fitted the demographics of our target audience and asked both males and females. I chose to create this questionnaire with both open and closed questions to produce Quantative data (statistics numerical data favoured by Positivists) and Qualitive data (descriptive data favoured by Interprevists).

Results from Question 1

1) Did you like the music Video? (please circle 1=No and 10=strong Yes)

From the results it can be seen that overall the participants liked the music video with an

  • Average score of 7.2
  • The range was of 2
  • The medium was 7.5
  • The mode was 8

As the score suggests that it was acceptable to the audience this also suggests that there was aspects that the audience felt needed to be changed or some aspects.

Results from Question 2

2) What aspects of the music video did you like and dislike?

Participant
Likes
Dislikes
1
‘Hand drawn animation’
‘The music. Setting suits it’
‘Abstract Audience – in time J’
‘The characters are static’
2
‘The art styles good’
‘Lack of movement – drummer especially’
‘Art seems unclean’
3
n/a
n/a
4
‘Song choice’
‘Art style’
‘Quality of Animation’
5
‘Quality of Animation’
‘lip sync to music’

These results show that there are aspects of the music video with the participants both liked and
disliked and to improve the overall appeal of the music video such as make the characters less “static” or improving the “lip sync”.

Results from Question 3

3) Do you feel that the use of animation suited the song theme and lyrics
yes
2
no
0
somewhat
3

Results from Question 3
From this I can say that overall participants felt that the use of animation suited the song choice. With overall positive responses however 60% of the responses felt that only the use of animation somewhat suited the song. This suggests that animation may not be a strong choice for suiting the song we chose.

Results from Question 4

4) What aspects would you feel could be changed to improve the piece?

Participant
What they feel necessary to improve the piece
1
‘The Characters are a little too slow for the music’
2
‘More fluidity
3
‘mouth movement’ and ‘Wider range of shots’
4
‘Animation – seemed still, could do with more movement ‘
5
‘The lip sync technology could be a bit more accurate’

From the results of question 4 there are some common aspects among them:

  • there are reference to the lip sync of the animation that suggests that we may not of lip synced the song that accurately.
  • There was also reference to the use of lack of movement of the characters which could lead them to seemly slow to the audience, perhaps by adding more movement it may make the image seem more fluid.
I feel that if we were to address these issues that the overall response would be more positive however as we have already completed the music video we may be able to apply these constructive criticism in the creation of other animated pieces in the future.

Results from Question 5

5) Do you feel the art style suited the genre? (please circle 1=No and 10=strong Yes)

  • Average score of 6.4
  • The range was of 4
  • The medium was 7
  • The mode was 7

From these statistics i can see that both mine and Zak's art style did suit the alternative rock genre well with an average score of 6.4 both mine and Zak's styles were cartoon like or chibi like but perhaps a more realistic art style may have come across more appealing to our target audience.

Result from Question 6

6) Do you feel that the music video would have worked better with a narrative/story?

Results from Question 6
From the overall response the audience felt that the music video worked well without a narrative with 40% no's, 40% unsure's  and 20% somewhat. This would suggest that an audience might prefer a narrative or story to a music video however the overall majority no not feel so or are unsure.

Results from Question 7

7) Does the editing match the pace of the song?

Yes

Results from Question 7
From the responses there were 100% positive or strongly positive views with regards to the pace of the editing and whether it matched the pace of the song. This suggests that we have successfully managed to match the pace and rhythm of the song.

As we used a self report method to collect this infomation there are some strenghs and weaknesses of using this meathod

Strengths -
  • We were able to collect both quantative and qualative data from the open and closed questions, this allows us get an insight into our target auidences view of the music video.

  • Questionnaire surveys can be carried out relatively cheaply.

  • If samples of people are selected at random and are large enough it should be possible to generalise the results to a larger population

Weaknesses -
  • People may not respond truthfully making the results less valid either because they wish to present themselves in a socially acceptable manner also known as the Hawthorne effect.

  • It may be difficult to obtain a random sample of the population because some people who are selected refuse to answer questions or it may be difficult to obtain a full list of the target population from which to select a random sample. This means in relation to our questionnaire that it is difficult to get a representative sample of our target auidnece.
